History of H-I-J … and Me
I was so excited when I drew my H-I-J .. I loved it. It was hard for me to put colored pencil to the paper for fear of wrecking it. I excitedly colored in Icanthis, the tall plant on the right. The variety of greens were fun and exciting – at least to me 🙂 So then it sit, because, again, I didn’t want to mess it up. Do you see why I liked it so much? Well time was coming near to when I had to jump in. And I decided that purple would be the other color … and that Joki, the big pile of seashells in the middle, rising up, would be purple. So I started off.
It was easy to put the dark purples on the left side, as I wanted. Then I moved to the lighter purples – lavender and such. Oh-oh!! The light purples didn’t parse out light enough. I kept at it for awhile. Then I took my nice handy art/scientific eraser and managed to get off a lot of the color. First time (and hopefully last) that I ever did this! The eraser and I became good friends … better friends than I wanted. Clearly the right side of Joki needed to become green.
What to Do Then?
I showed Carolien what I eventually came up with – after multiple tries. Then I sort of liked it and sort of didn’t. I had really gotten thrown by my … undoings and redoings. I wasn’t sure if the color were rich or muddy. So Carolien/Zandiepants took my image and did her digital magic on it. She is a master at adding layers with different layer blends – and then creating very unusual effects. So you can see her version below. Much less muddy (that is what Carolien called it when she saw it).
Well too much white for my taste. Carolien could see that the whites looked more like her own style. So then I used my type of layer magic to make it more like my own work. Carolien and I both thought that the final version looked most like my work, so it became *the* H-I-J. So much for tales of coloring … in the life of Diane.

H-I-J Challenge
Each week Carolien and I put out a challenge for folks to make their representation of our idea. This week is the Weekly Challenge #99: Tangle with H-I-J. So here is what we say this week “This week is Challenge #99, the Alphabet challenge of H, I & J. Use tangles starting with the letters H, I & J in your drawing. It’s your choice to only use patterns with these letters or to add some others as well. Happy Tangling!! We look forward to seeing what you come up with for your H, I & J.” Thus this is a little ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) using tangles that start with the letters H, I & J.
Zentangle Enticed Me
So above is my Challenge ZIA. I am excited that Carolien and I now realize we can make the thumbnails bigger!! We are hoping others will join us again now that we are back on track!! This – of course – went in a very different direction than expected!!! There are a lot of details about my journey above 🙂 🙂 🙂
Which Tangle is Which?
Icanthis is the tall green plant on the right. Joki is the pile of seashells in the middle, rising up. Kochlea is the 2 conch shells in the top left – they are butting heads. Flux is the 4 leaves hanging under Kochlea. Heartleaf is the 2 plants created by layers of upside down hearts, one on the left and the other in front of Joki. Huaguo is the 3 plants with the funny looking caps. Two are on the bottom left and 1 is in front of Joki. Zinger is the 4 waving, long stemmed mushrooms flying from Kochlea. Tipple is all the little tiny bubbles, starting above Joki and flowing all around Joki. 🙂 🙂 There you have it!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
