Negative Space Challenge
Occasionally some friends put out a challenge for folks to make their representation of their idea. This week is the Tangled Thursday – Negative Space. So here is what Heather says “This week’s challenge was from Marie at Daisy’s Book Journal, to use negative space. Please drop by Marie’s blog this week and leave her a message of encouragement. The river behind her house is flooding and it’s expected to be bad. It flooded two years ago and that was supposed to have been a 300 year storm. This could easily be worse.” Marie, I sure hope things are better for you by now!!! So this is a ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) using Negative Space!
Zentangle Enticed Me
Zentangle has become popular the last couple of years and I have been intrigued and just starting put my attention to it. I hope you can see that my negative space is a heart – so above is my Negative Space Zentangle Tangle ZIA. This – of course – went in a very different direction than expected!
Using Negative Space
About half these tangles I have used before. Rather than use new tangles (which I usually go for), I was focused on using tangles that would create an edge – but without their being an edge tangle themselves! The new ones (to me) are Jetties, Barberpole, Cruffle and Bunzo. I am always looking to figure out new (to me) tangles so I can practice some. I penciled in a heart and then started to figure out how to make an edge without looking like I was making an edge. Also, I have an art card that I had started trying something on and gave up pretty quickly (ie got a new card). So this one had 2 places that I had started designs so I decided to use it and make the old part hidden into this ZIA. I think it worked pretty well. So I just started, created with a tangle and I would just plan the next tangle I was going to use in this process. Just how it happened!
Which Tangle is Which?
The right side of the heart is Rixty … and then it angles over and dances down on the right. (I will share the order that I created this.) The top part of the heart is Barberpole. And I gave it another turn so it wasn’t just the top of the heart that had an angle. Next I created Jetties which created the left side of the heart. It also hide a design I had tried earlier. I am pretty happy with the Jetties! Then I made Bunzo in the top right, to the right of Rixty. I had seen a Bunzo flower I love and I tried to make this like that – while also covering the other design I had made. Somewhat successful. After some thought I decided Cruffle would make a good bottom of the heart … and echo the Jetties too. Lastly (and leastly), I used Kurlllz in the top left. This is the only part I am not very happy about. It is such a simple tangle, I have used it before … but it never comes out quite right. And there you have it!
I am always a little shocked when I see my ZIA blown up – all these spaces then show up (but it actually wasn’t too bad this week) … but I wanted to get it into this Tangled Thursday challenge. I am still creating these ZIAs lying down while working on an Art Card size (2.5×3.5″). So perhaps not too bad given that.
I have been slowly sharing my other ones on Facebook. I changed to using Art Card size (2.5×3.5″) since I have a bunch cut out already from good quality paper. It might not be as smooth as it should be. But I am learning! And my studio is getting more organized so maybe I can cut some new paper!! I can’t wait to find my black paper and do some cutting!

Good job. I should have done like you and thought more about the edge of my tangles before I started drawing. Yours made for a good outline of the heart.
thanks for linking up with Tangled Thursday.
Thank you so much, Heather!!!
