| Communicating Gracefully and Effectively | ||||
Basic Conscious Communication Skills
| Relationship is the major theme of this course. We have no control over what another human being doesunless we are willing to use power over them, which damages relationship: It sets the other person on a course of using whatever power they have to regain self-esteem by defending the very behavior we want them to change. Gandhi teaches: The more force you use, the less influence you will have.
He also said being right in a conflict is useless behavior. We need to put that tendency behind us and get on with relating to the person in front of us. Creating a relationship, or respecting an existing one, creates the most possibility for responsiveness. When we verbally attack another person, we diminish that possibility. In the words of one parent who took this course, Communicating is a lot of work. Its easier to just boss my kids. I guess I have to decide whether I want obedient kids or responsible kids who feel respected and know how to respect me back. Its true: Communicating well and building relationships take much more time and effort than power plays, but is well worth the effort. |
