Create. Collect. Trade. - A 2nd ACEO Book Edition

Monday, November 3rd, 2008
Below is the image of the ACEO (Art Cards) book that I bought a space to be in last year.  A very dedicated art teacher has been creating this book and making a blog to encourage her students to creatre and trade ACEOs/Art Cards.  You can see my painting as one that is featured on the color of last years book.  I am very glad I did it - I have a nice 2 page spread with a variety of work - and some text. If you are thinking of joining in (it costs $40), the deadline has been extended to September 11, 2008. I have copied the text from 2 posts on her blog (with permission, of course) so that you can read about it and see if perhaps you would like to join in.  All proceeds help with the students, books for the students and ACEO education.

The Fall 2008 Edition of “Create. Collect. Trade. A Collection of Artist Trading Cards Created by Artists and Students,” is in production and accepting ACEO artists at this time to fill 30 available spots.

WHAT WILL THE ARTIST RECEIVE?

For the $40, each artist will receive 2 FULL PAGES in the book. 4-8 Images from each artist will be placed on the two pages. The artist may write a short paragraph about their art, Etsy shop, experiences, or information they would like to share on their page. Artists may also post links to their shops, website, blogs, etc. for further promotion and information. Upon purchasing, the artist understands that information and images should be appropriate for elementary age students eyes.

-Each artist will be recognized on http://createcollecttrade.blogspot.com/ and gain local and national attention through distribution of the book.

-The book will also be presented in an 2-hour workshop at the AEAI Art Education Conference in November.

-7 Artists will also be selected to appear on the front cover along with 5 students.

Here is the listing to reserve your two pages in the book…http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=14535247

*Each book includes an actual student ATC to start or add to your collection of ACEOs and ATCs.

**Profits from the book and ads go to the purchase of student copies of “Create. Collect. Trade.” I have been writing many grants to help provide copies, but I can only do so much!

If you are not sure if this is something you are interested, feel free to check out the first book (currently on back order, but will be available in 2 weeks).

open until the images and text deadline on Saturday the 11th if any
last minute artists want to join!

Contact me at createcollecttrade@yahoo.com if you are interested!

I hope you have enjoyed reading about this and seeing last year’s book.  This is the only time that I have ever paid to be in something - but the proceeds are for books for the students. Musicians are Supporting Visual Artists Around Orphan Works Act

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Independent musicians are now supporting the Visual Artists with the Orphan Works Act given the way it is written right now.  The original intent has pretty much gotten lost .. and big business interests have taken over (my interpretation). There is a lot more information in the posts for the last 2 days. Here is one of my original ACEOs I made … I need to get back to making some more in traditional mediums beside digital.

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS’ PARTNERSHIP

Visual Artists Go to Washington, Independent Record Labels Oppose
Orphan Works Act

Last week over two dozen visual artists, representing illustrators,
photographers, fine artists and the arts licensing trades went to
Capital Hill to explain to legislators how the Orphan Works Act
will harm creators and the hundreds of thousands of art-related
small businesses that serve and are dependent on them. At the same
time, independent music labels have joined the opposition to orphan
works legislation as it currently exists.

The Illustrators’ Partnership has stressed that Orphan Works
legislation should be limited to true orphaned work and not act as
an unwarranted compulsory license imposed on commercial markets.
IPA, the Advertising Photographers of America and the Artists
Rights Society have joined to offer amendments to that effect.

Excerpted from the Washington Internet Daily/Monday June 09, 2008:

The visual-arts community hit the Hill last week to protest what it
portrays as a hijacking of the orphan-works issue as it was
presented in a 2005 Copyright Office report…

The Copyright Office ran a bait-and-switch from its 2005 notice of
intent, which focused on facilitating libraries’, museums’ and
other nonprofits’ efforts to digitize collections to improve access
to them, [Illustrators' Partnership co-founder Brad] Holland said.
Artists want the issue narrowed back to that focus, scrapping
commercial use, he said…Copyright Office roundtables on orphan
works never addressed alternates to registries, an “untested,
untried, unaccountable market system” favoring Google, Getty,
Corbis and other commercial aggregators, Holland said. [Cynthia]
Turner [also of the Partnership] said artists would incur high
costs registering works, and they hesitate to hand over high-res,
commercial versions to Google or others.

In the same article, Washington Internet Daily also reports that
the leading group of independent music labels has broken with the
corporate music trade associations. The American Association of
Independent Music has published a position paper opposing the
current orphan works bills. The article quotes a music industry
executive: “I can tell you that nobody in the music business”
sought the bill.

… the executive said the bill is “de facto… establishing a new
compulsory license” by putting unregistered artists at a legal
disadvantage in court. The law can’t explicitly require
registration or it will violate the Berne Convention, TRIPS and
other treaties the U.S. has signed, the executive said. Book
publishers and music executives in the U.K. think the U.S. will be
in trouble, the executive said, citing a recent visit: “I can tell
you there are European commissioners that are looking at this right
now.”

Labels” by Greg Piper, Washington Internet Daily June 09, 2008

ACEO Edition for Sale

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

You asked for more bubbles, so here is another one. To me this has a very different atmosphere from the others. To me, this has a very peaceful feeling .. and I still need some rest and rejuvenation from how hard I have been working lately. I would love to hear how you are doing!

ACEOs are Art Cards Editions and Originals. They (also called ATC - Art Trading Cards) are 2.5 x 3.5″ big. (You can read about ACEOs here and here.) When I mentioned I was going to put some ACEOs in my Etsy Shop, you suggested that I make “bubbles” ACEOs. So I thought I would try something that Lisa Call has done - offer them for sale right on the blog.

Autumn Ruminations

In the Zone, ACEO Edition © Diane Clancy

If anyone wants to have this, it’s yours for $7 including shipping. It is titled and signed on the back. It is enclosed in an archival sleeve and then enclosed in a 3 x 4″ rigid topload card holder for safety and display. I had never heard of them until a month or so ago. And seeing all these little pictures I have printed out in archival inks and paper, I now understand why people do collect them.

I have tended to collect greeting cards of other artists’ work to have art to be inspired by at a reasonable price. But I now see the allure of all these pretty paintings, nice and small and all the same size. So I am a convert!

Printing ACEOs

Friday, October 26th, 2007

I am going to print some ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals) or ATC (Art Trading Cards) today. As I mentioned in this post, ACEOs or ATCs (the same thing, just different artists call them various names) are like baseball cards - except for artists. Actually, not just for artists any more than baseball cards are for baseball players! They are a relatively inexpensive way for people to collect artists work they like.

Emerald Matrix

I am going to print these 2.5 x 3.5″ prints on my printer with archival ink and archival paper and package them in 3×4″ sleeves for baseball cards and then in a protective holder made for baseball cards. The artists over at Etsy have been incredibly generous in helping me make decisions as they have shared how they do it. Thank you!!

My ACEOs probably won’t be listed until Saturday, but I am going to do them now. My shop is www.dianeclancy.etsy.com if you would like to check it out. It is such a balancing act to create art and market it. Also, a balancing act to pay attention to what people want and be true to myself and my artistic vision.

I attended a town meeting for Greening Greenfield yesterday to further environmental consciousness. Encouraging people, without guilting people, I think is important. And being inclusive!! I would love to hear how and what you are doing!

Handing Out Awards

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Neda created some awards recently in response to the Blog Action Day. She gave them to me for some of my work. Neda suggested we pass them along also. Most of you I visit regularly also got theses awards so I am going to introduce you to some new blogs.

Artist for Peace

Artist for Peace © Neda Doany

Tom Weiner has started a blog relatively recently and he has been quite busy!! His blog is called Vietnam War Draft Stories. He has been writing a book “Called To Serve: Stories of Men and Women Affected by the Vietnam Draft.” He wants to help heal the pain still going on from that war and build bridges. I find that both of these awards are perfect for him as a writer. you may notice that Tom’s blog is laid out a little differently than usual. His front page is static - he is still wanting stories. Some of the stories are on pages - accessed from the sidebar. And also his new posts are also accessed from the sidebar.

Global Artist

Global Artist © Neda Doany

The other people who have started blogging haven’t done many posts yet. They have let periods of time stretch without posting. But I know them personally and know that all three are working for peace and harmony. I am giving them this reward for the work that they do as artists for peace rather than as bloggers for peace. And I do hope that this award will encourage them to blog more regularly!

Pam Roberts has a blog Spirit of the Written Word and she works with the healing power of words for healing health issues and our feelings around these issues. “The Healing Power of Writing” is her caption. This is why I feels she deserves this award.

Ellen Blanchette has a blog called Arts & Politics. Ellen is a photographer and also a writer, among other artistic things. She started her blog particularly to discuss art and also politics … which is why I am giving her this award. I know the general drift of her politics and I know she is for peace and for protecting the environment.

Karl Meyer has a blog called Karl Meyer Writing and he also writes many articles for newspapers, books and such. Trust me, he is very active for global peace, the environment and rights! He hasn’t written that much political in his blog yet, but wait until he gets going!

A Windy Day-ACEO

I want you to have a chance to know about these other blogs and also to encourage these new bloggers that it is worth writing … people do read.

By the way, I would encourage someone who has one of Frances‘ awards, to give the teaching award to Neda. She has had some many posts with hints about how she collages, I think it would be great to give her that award! Frances’ awards are very beautiful and I hope they get passed along!! They deserve to!

I would love to hear about you too!!

Internet Connection

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Susan gave out awards yesterday … starting another round I am sure! I have spent the whole day getting my internet connection back. I had to buy another modem and couldn’t find a dsl modem without a router. I already have a good router, so I didn’t want to re-buy it and lose the network I have. But it became clear that, around here anyway, that is your choice. So I bought it and installed and am now back up and running!.

Flowers in the Sun-ACEO

So all is setup but it has taken most of the day. So I am going to make this brief and will catch up tomorrow on blogs and comments. This was one of the ACEOs I created the other day. I really like it! There has only been one comment on the latest series I have been doing … I have been wondering if you like them. But I would love to hear how you are!!

World Card Making Day

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

I am very moved by the outpouring of kindness and understanding that you have given me in your comments! You have touched me in a deep place in my soul with your connecting to me … and letting me know about it! This is an added bonus I did not expect when I started blogging!

Happy Dog

Happy Dog, ACEO © Diane Clancy

I promised I would give you the link to the World Card Making Day (WCMD)- which was yesterday, October 6, 2007. If I had known earlier, I would have shared this so all of you could have the chance to play too. It is a little like Rima’s challenges … different blogs set up a kind of card to make and then details were posted during different times of the day and then people went to town creating cards!

ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals) and ATC ( Art Trading Cards) are 2.5 x 3.5″ cards (made of many different materials) that people trade and collect. They are the same size as a baseball card (at least baseball cards in the US - I don’t know about other countries) and people often keep them in plastic sleeves that people use for baseball cards.

I have had a request to make some of these ACEOs and so I saw an opportunity that would force me to push myself fast and furious without worrying about quality .. sort of like it was for me when I took art classes. I produced tons of work because there was a deadline without the pressure of having to be perfect … I am sure many of you understand what I mean.

If you want to see the ACEOs I made yesterday they are posted at my other blogs here and here. I posted until 2 am my time last night so there may be some you didn’t catch. There are no duplicate ACEO images between the 2 blogs. And I hadn’t posted on either since I posted about the Blog Action Day - so that is when you will know you have seen all the ACEOs.

For me it was a great chance to get the brush going again without worrying about meaning or what it looked like. I need to do my environmental challenge so hopefully the brush got loosened up so now there is just the brain (or heart and soul) that need loosening.

The other thing I wanted to share is about this painting. I just was putting paint down and I thought it looked terrible - so I almost threw it aside. But I am very conscious of the earth and thriftiness. So I put a little more on it. Then I wiped a brush on it. Then put a bunch of marks in the back. Then, magically, at one moment, it showed itself as a dog. A pretty cool dog too I think. So I went back and reworked it a bunch more times … I thought you would be interested to know about its history. I think it is one of the strongest images from yesterday .. and it almost got thrown out!

I want you to remember that persevering is important. Things may not go quite right at the moment, in life and in painting, but keep stick with your process. You helped me persevere yesterday with painting and painting when it all looked like total junk to me .. then it gelled. So I want to pass this along to you!

Wow! and Thank you!

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

I am very awed and humbled by the generous outpouring of kindness you have given me in the last 24 hours!! I will write more about the details of things, but today I will just give you broad strokes since I am still working.

Heart of Life

Heart of Life, ACEO © Diane Clancy

Last night after writing the post, I found out that today is World Card Making Day - tomorrow I will do the link. I decided that it was a good excuse to dive in without worrying too too much. I want to do the Environmental Blog Day painting more carefully!

It was quite a ride for me for several hours. I hadn’t painted with a brush for a couple of years, I hadn’t done any cards for quite a bit longer and I had never done ACEO or ATC - more tomorrow on them. It was quite hard for several hours. But after awhile, things started to gel for me.

I am done creating for today, but I am still uploading ACEOs for the challenge. You can check out what I have posted so far at my other blogs here and here. There are no duplicate ACEO images between the 2 blogs. And I hadn’t posted on either since I posted about the Blog Action Day - so that is when you will know you have seen all I have posted tonight.

I will respond tomorrow to your comments - THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! - and your blogs too. I appreciate you all so so much!

Of course, I am glad to hear about you!
